What is 5G ?
5G is the fifth generation mobile network. This new generation will use more frequencies and will relieve the congestion on 4G frequencies. To do this, operators will have to install new antennas throughout France to use the new frequencies. Indeed, the frequencies that will be used will be different from those of 4G. The disadvantage of this system is that users will have to acquire new telephones, which will be compatible with this new network.

What is the difference with 4G ?
Currently the 4G+ speed varies between 100 and 250 Mbit/s in well-covered areas with a ping at 20ms. 5G will allow much higher speeds than 4G and extremely low latency. The 5G will be able to wait several gigabits per second allowing films, series and games to be downloaded much faster. Moreover, this low latency makes it easier to play games on your mobile.
In France, this new technology will be available from 18 November 2020. But beware, there are several frequencies in 5G and the current frequencies are only slightly higher than 4G. The 5G frequencies are as follows :

  • 3.5 Ghz Frequency : It will be the most used and slightly faster than 4G. It ensures a good flow/distance ratio.
  • 700 Mhz Frequency : It has the advantage of carrying further, which theoretically limits the number of relays for deployment. It is adapted to rural areas and penetrates well inside buildings. But this frequency does not allow the very high speed promised by 5G.
  • 26 Ghz Frequency : We are talking about millimetre waves. With very high frequencies, the 26 GHz band, never before used in mobile telephony, will enable very high speeds to be reached in mobility. On the other hand, they have a poor range and poor penetration inside buildings. The 26 GHz band will be allocated to 5G in the coming years, but not before 2022-2023. It is with this frequency that the user will have the best data rates.

Additional application
First of all, 5G will allow for much higher upload and download speeds than before. Thanks to 5G, we will be able to stream 4K and 8K videos and play in cloud gaming or virtual reality without latency. Indeed, all the computing power will be able to be transferred to industrial servers. The 5G will also make it possible to connect more objects to the network without cluttering it up.
This network will also allow more and more connected robots :

  • Medicine : Surgeons will be able to perform operations remotely using one connected to the 5G network and there will be no latency. As a result, renaming specialists will be able to operate in many hospitals around the world in a minimum amount of time (as they will not need to travel).
  • Automobile : Vehicles will be able to communicate in real time about traffic, accidents, slowdowns… In addition, vehicles will be able to adapt their speeds according to the high beam lights to make traffic flow more smoothly.
  • Industry : Robots can be controlled remotely without the use of network cables.

Conclusion
Today, 5G is booming. For the time being, 5G speeds do not yet justify the change of a telephone. Maximum 5G speeds will be reached around 2022-2023. In addition, the price of packages is higher than 4G and will only decrease in a few years. So 5G is an evolution today but will be a revolution tomorrow.

  1. According to the study conducted by the WHO (World Health Organization), 5G waves are no more dangerous than 4G waves. And no other study shows the certain dangerousness of the waves in general. On the other hand, Europe limits the specific absorption rate which corresponds to the energy of the electromagnetic waves absorbed by the body when using radio equipment. This limitation is supposed to protect us from the amount of waves we absorb. Many people criticize 5G because it’s a new technology and people are suspicious of this new technology in relation to government surveillance…
